Why Engineers (and Everyone) Should Care?

In this event, we invited Professor Patricia M. Davidson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wollongong (UOW), and Professor Vahan Agopyan, President of the University of São Paulo (USP), to open the webinar with their thoughts on women in engineering and the broader STEM.

This was followed with two guest speakers, Dr Quah Ee Ling from UOW and Professor Eva Alterman Blay from USP.

Dr Quah who both opened a dialogue about feminisms and its research, culture and history, and its impact on us socially and within the engineering field.

Prof. Eva Alterman Blay spoke about ‘The War Against Gender’ occurring in Brazil.

“The term gender was banned by the federal government, by the Ministry of Education, it was removed from school books. While in the civilized world science woke up precisely to include in its research the gender dimension – researching the male and the female – here we have returned to the medieval period.”

Prof. Eva Alterman Blay

You can find a transcript of her lecture in Portuguese published in Jornal da USP.
