From the Lab to Leadership: My Wholesome Journey Through the LIFT Program

Category Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Event Recap In the Press

When I joined the LIFT Program through the University of Wollongong and iAccelerate, supported by the Australian Government’s Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship (WISE) initiative, I didn’t fully realise how much it would reshape my perspective. What began as an opportunity to develop leadership skills turned into a deeply enriching experience that wove together reflection, research, entrepreneurship, and friendship. From a two-day retreat by the ocean in Kiama to my extended internship at ANSTO, alongside several weeks of iAccelerate workshops followed by a memorable LIFT dinner, the past few months have been nothing short of wholesome.

The leadership and values retreat in Kiama was the perfect beginning. Set against the calm of the coast, it gave me space to reflect on my values and the kind of leader I aspire to be. Through group activities, storytelling, and honest conversations, I discovered that leadership isn’t just about leading others but about understanding yourself.

“Leadership isn’t about hierarchy—it’s about self-awareness, empathy, and authenticity.”

I came away feeling grounded, inspired, and part of something bigger.

My LIFT internship took me to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), where I began modelling Sydney’s water supply sources using stable isotopes.

What started as a three-month internship was extended to six, a reflection of how much I loved the work. I saw how scientific research can support real-world decisions for cleaner, safer water and how collaborative environments can bring the best ideas to life.

Science doesn’t just live in the lab—it thrives in collaboration and shared purpose.”

In between lab work and data modelling, I joined the iAccelerate Entrepreneur Program, a series of workshops that pushed me to think differently. Translating my research into a product idea, I developed FluoFree—a compact water purification system alert. Learning about lean innovation, sustainability, and pitching was an incredible experience. Standing in front of mentors and peers to deliver my pitch was one of those moments where nerves met pride, realising that my science could become something tangible that helps people.

The LIFT Dinner brought everything together. It was more than just a closing event; it felt like a celebration of how far we’d come. Surrounded by women from the Learn, Ignite, Flourish, and Transform pillars, we shared our journeys, laughed about challenges, and reflected on moments that shaped us. The evening was filled with warmth and gratitude, a reminder that behind every milestone stands a community cheering you on.

“Behind every success is a network of women lifting each other higher.”

Looking back, the LIFT Program has been one of the most meaningful parts of my academic journey. It helped me discover the leader within, connect with inspiring women across disciplines, and see how science can evolve into social impact. As I continue my internship at ANSTO and prepare to return to my PhD, I carry forward the lessons of courage, creativity, and collaboration. LIFT didn’t just elevate my career; it lifted my confidence and sense of purpose.

If you ever get the chance to be part of the LIFT community, take it. Step outside your comfort zone, say yes to new opportunities, and let yourself grow in directions you never expected.

“Sometimes, the biggest discoveries don’t happen in the lab—they happen within yourself.”
